Material and Methods: Thirteen patients with Wallenberg’s lateral medullary syndrome were examined with conventional and echoplanar diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in a 1.5 T magnetic resonance unit. MR examinations were obtained in the acute or subacute stage of clinical syndrome, and diffusion-weighted patients with Wallenberg's lateral medullary syndrome and to compare MRI with CT. Subjects and Methods From September 1984 through o Februarf 1985, y four hospitalized patients with Wallenberg's lateral medullary syndrome were evaluate at thde University of Iowa Hospitals. These were the only patients with this syndrome seen during that period. Radiology Cases: Lateral Medullary Syndrome (Wallenberg) Radiology Cases. Using transverse images and both T(and T2 — weighted sequences, MRI demonstrated a medullary infarction not seen on CT in all four cases. Material and Methods: Thirteen patients with Wallenberg’s lateral medullary syndrome were examined with conventional and echoplanar diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in a 1.5 T magnetic resonance unit. MR examinations were obtained in the acute or subacute stage of clinical syndrome, and diffusion-weighted Wallenberg syndrome is also known as lateral medullary syndrome or the posterior inferior cerebellar artery syndrome. Wallenberg described the first case in 1895. This neurological disorder is associated with a variety of symptoms that occur as a result of damage to the lateral segment of the medulla posterior to the inferior olivary nucleus.
